How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photo Session: Timing, Feeding, and What to Expect

Your baby is almost here (or maybe they have already arrived), and your newborn photo session is on the calendar. Now what?

If you are anything like most of the parents I work with here in Manalapan, you probably have a hundred things running through your mind right now. Will the baby cooperate? What if they cry the whole time? What do I even need to bring?

I want to put your mind at ease. Newborn sessions are my world, and I have guided hundreds of families through this exact process. Here is your complete guide to preparing for a session that feels calm, enjoyable, and results in images you will treasure forever.

Timing Is Everything: The 5 to 14 Day Sweet Spot

The ideal window for newborn portraits is between 5 and 14 days after birth. There is a reason photographers talk about this timeframe so much, and it comes down to two things: sleepiness and flexibility.

In those first two weeks of life, babies are incredibly sleepy. They curl naturally into those beautiful, tucked poses that define classic newborn photography. Their skin is still fresh, they have not yet developed baby acne (which typically shows up around week three), and they are small enough to be gently positioned without any fuss.

After the two-week mark, babies become more alert, more aware of their surroundings, and significantly harder to settle into those peaceful sleeping poses. That does not mean beautiful photos are impossible after 14 days, but the session will look and feel different. If your baby arrives early or late and the timing shifts, do not stress. Just reach out and we will adjust the plan.

Book During Your Second Trimester

This is one of the most important pieces of advice I can give you: do not wait until after the baby is born to book your session. Newborn photographers often have limited availability because of that narrow ideal window, and your due date is unpredictable. Booking during your second trimester (around 20 to 28 weeks) secures your spot on the calendar and gives us plenty of time to plan the details.

When you book early, I pencil in a tentative session date based on your due date. Once your baby arrives, you let me know and we confirm the exact date, typically scheduling the session within that first two-week window.

Feeding Before the Session

A full baby is a happy baby, and a happy baby is a sleepy baby. That is exactly what we want.

I always recommend feeding your newborn right before the session begins, whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding. A full feeding helps your baby settle into a deep, comfortable sleep, which makes the entire session smoother for everyone. If you are breastfeeding, please do not hesitate to nurse during the session. I build time into every appointment for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and anything else your baby needs. There is absolutely no rush.

If your baby tends to be gassy or fussy after feeding, bring whatever helps: a pacifier, gas drops, a specific swaddle they love. You know your baby better than anyone, and I want you to feel empowered to do whatever keeps them comfortable.

What to Bring to Your Session

I provide all wraps, blankets, baskets, and props for the session. You do not need to bring anything elaborate. But here are a few things I always recommend having on hand:

Extra diapers and wipes (newborns have impeccable timing when it comes to diaper situations during photo sessions). A backup outfit for baby in case of any accidents. One or two sentimental items if you would like them included in the photos. Things like a special blanket from a grandparent, a tiny pair of shoes, a meaningful stuffed animal, or a family heirloom. These personal touches add so much warmth to the final images.

If siblings are joining the session, bring a small snack and something to keep them entertained during the solo newborn portion. A tablet loaded with their favorite show or a few small toys can be a lifesaver.

What to Expect During the Session

Newborn sessions typically last between two and three hours. I know that sounds long, but most of that time is built around your baby’s rhythm. We are not rushing through a 30-minute time slot trying to get a checklist of shots. We are following your baby’s lead.

If they need to eat, we pause. If they need a diaper change, we pause. If they are fussy and need a few minutes of rocking and soothing, we pause. The session is designed around your baby’s comfort first, and the beautiful images follow naturally from there.

I keep the studio warm (babies love warmth and it helps them stay sleepy), I use white noise to mimic the sounds of the womb, and I handle your newborn with the gentle, experienced hands of someone who has done this hundreds of times. Your only job is to relax.

A Note for Parents Who Are Nervous

If this is your first baby, or even if it is not, it is completely normal to feel anxious about a newborn session. Will the baby cooperate? Will the photos look stiff? Will I look like a mess on two hours of sleep?

I hear these concerns all the time, and here is what I want you to know: there is no such thing as a bad newborn session. Babies are unpredictable, and that unpredictability is part of what makes these images so honest and so beautiful. The quiet moments, the tiny yawns, the way your baby curls into your chest. Those are not posed. Those are real. And those are the images you will come back to over and over again.

I want the preparation process to feel simple, not stressful. That is why I walk every family through the details before the session, from timing and wardrobe to exactly what the day will look like. No surprises, no guesswork.
