The Best Locations for Family Photos in Monmouth County NJ

One of the first questions families ask after booking a session is: where should we take our photos? And if you live anywhere in Monmouth County, you are in luck, because this area has some of the most beautiful and varied photography locations in all of New Jersey.

I have photographed families at beaches, parks, gardens, historic sites, and quiet little spots that most people drive past without a second glance. Over the years, I have built a list of favorites that consistently produce stunning images across every season. Here are my top recommendations for family photos in Monmouth County.

Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown

If you love lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and a touch of old-world charm, Deep Cut Gardens is one of the most photogenic locations in Monmouth County. This 54-acre park is the horticultural heart of the county park system and features everything from manicured rose gardens to wooded walking paths. Spring and summer sessions here are absolutely gorgeous, with blooms providing natural color and texture in every frame. Fall brings warm foliage and a completely different mood. I have shot here in every season and it never disappoints.

Holmdel Park, Holmdel

Holmdel Park is a go-to for families who want a mix of open fields, shaded trails, and natural settings. It has a beautiful pond, wooded areas, and wide meadows that catch golden hour light in the most incredible way. One of the things I love about this location is the variety. In a single session, we can shoot in a sunlit clearing, walk into a canopy of trees for moody, dappled light, and finish near the water. It is also a wonderful option for families with younger kids because there is plenty of room for them to run and explore between posed moments.

Spring Lake Beach and Boardwalk

Spring Lake is often called the Jewel of the Jersey Shore, and once you see it on camera, you will understand why. The beach is clean, quiet, and has beautiful dunes that make a perfect natural backdrop. The boardwalk is less crowded than other shore towns and has a timeless, elegant feel. And Divine Park, just a few blocks from the beach, has a gorgeous lake with wooden bridges, willow trees, and lush greenery that photographs beautifully in spring and fall. I love scheduling sessions here that start at the park and end on the beach at golden hour. The variety in a single session is incredible.

Allaire State Park, Wall Township

For families who want something with a little more character and texture, Allaire State Park is a hidden gem. The historic village within the park has old brick and wooden buildings, rustic fences, and a charm that gives photos a warm, storybook quality. It is particularly stunning in the fall when the foliage turns and the afternoon light filters through the trees. This is one of my favorite spots for families with toddlers and older kids because the village setting gives them something to explore and interact with, which leads to some of the most natural and joyful expressions.

Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area

Sandy Hook is unlike any other beach in Monmouth County. It is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, which means it is protected, expansive, and beautifully wild. The beaches here are wider and less developed than the standard Jersey Shore scene, with dune grass, open sky, and a sense of openness that makes for breathtaking portraits. Morning sessions here are especially magical, with soft golden light reflecting off the bay. It is also a wonderful spot for families who want a more relaxed, barefoot-on-the-sand kind of session.

Thompson Park, Lincroft

Thompson Park is a local favorite for good reason. The tall grasses along the walking paths create a dreamy, golden-hour backdrop, and the mature maple trees hold their color well into late fall. It is a great option for families who want a natural, earthy feel without driving to the shore. The open fields and wooded trails give us plenty of variety, and because it is a bit less well-known than Holmdel or Deep Cut, it tends to be quieter during session times.

Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

If you are looking for waterfront scenery with a little something extra, Bayshore Waterfront Park delivers. It features sandy beaches, scenic piers, and views of the New York City skyline across the water. The combination of natural shoreline and architectural elements like the pier railing and walkways gives us a range of looks within a single location. Sunset sessions here are particularly dramatic with the skyline silhouetted in the background.

Your Own Home

I could not make this list without including this one. Some of the most beautiful and meaningful family photos I have ever taken were shot inside a family’s home. The nursery you spent months designing. The living room where your family gathers every evening. The front porch where your toddler waves goodbye every morning. These spaces tell your story in a way that no park or beach ever could, and they are especially powerful for newborn and lifestyle sessions.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Timing matters as much as location. The best outdoor light happens during golden hour, which is roughly the last one to two hours before sunset. Harsh midday sun creates unflattering shadows and squinting faces, so I always recommend scheduling outdoor sessions later in the day.

Some Monmouth County parks require photography permits for professional sessions. I handle all of that on my end so you do not need to worry about it, but it is worth knowing in case you are researching on your own.

And if none of these locations speak to you, that is perfectly fine. I am always open to scouting new spots or working with a location that is meaningful to your family. The best backdrop is always the one that feels right for you.
