Why the Best Time for Family Photos Is Not When You Think

Most families think about booking portraits during the fall or right before the holidays. It is a popular season for a reason. The weather is crisp, the leaves are beautiful, and everyone wants updated photos for cards and gifts. But as a New Jersey-based photographer, I can tell you that some of the most relaxed, meaningful, and memorable sessions happen during the quieter months of the year. There is something special about choosing a time that is not part of the typical rush.

If you have ever felt overwhelmed by the fall portrait season or wished you could have a session that feels calm and personal, non-traditional timing might be exactly what your family needs. Here are some of my favorite times of year to schedule portraits and why they work so well.

Right After the New Year

The weeks following New Year’s Day are some of the most peaceful of the entire year. The holiday rush is over, schedules begin to settle, and families often feel refreshed and ready for a slower pace. This is a wonderful time to capture portraits because everyone is more relaxed. Kids are not overstimulated from holiday activities, and parents are not juggling a long list of seasonal obligations.

In my Morganville studio, winter light creates a soft, cozy atmosphere that photographs beautifully. Families who prefer at-home sessions also love this time of year because it captures their real-life environment during the season they spend the most time indoors. Snuggles on the couch, reading together, or playing in the living room all create warm, natural images that feel true to your family.

Late Winter and Early Spring

Before the flowers bloom and before the spring rush begins, there is a quiet window that is perfect for portraits. The air is crisp, the parks are empty, and the soft winter colors create a timeless backdrop. Outdoor sessions during this time feel peaceful and intimate. Children can explore without crowds, and families can enjoy a slower, more relaxed experience.

This is also a great time to book milestone sessions, motherhood portraits, or updated extended family photos. As a New Jersey-based photographer, I offer studio, at-home, and outdoor options, so you can choose the environment that fits your style. Whether you want a clean, minimalist studio look or a cozy lifestyle session at home, this season gives you plenty of flexibility.

Before a Holiday Instead of During the Rush

Many families wait until the month of a holiday to schedule photos, but choosing a date a few weeks earlier can make the entire experience smoother. For example, booking Valentine’s Day portraits in January or Mother’s Day portraits in early April gives you more availability, more creative freedom, and more time to enjoy the images.

This approach works beautifully for birthdays, too. Instead of waiting until the exact birthday week, scheduling a session a month or two before gives you time to plan outfits, choose a theme, and enjoy the photos on the actual birthday. I offer both creative and minimalist birthday sessions, and siblings are always welcome to join in. These sessions are some of my favorites because they capture personality, joy, and all the little details that change so quickly.

Summer Weekdays

Summer weekends fill quickly, but summer weekdays are a hidden gem. The days are long, the light is beautiful, and families often have more flexibility with school out of session. Outdoor sessions at the beach, in a field, or at a local park feel playful and relaxed. Kids can run, explore, and enjoy the warm weather, which leads to natural, joyful images.

Summer is also a wonderful time for maternity sessions, motherhood portraits, and large family sessions. If you have relatives visiting from out of town, this is the perfect opportunity to capture everyone together.

Why Non-Traditional Timing Works So Well

Choosing a less common time of year for portraits gives you more availability, more creative options, and a calmer experience overall. You are not competing with the seasonal rush, and you have the freedom to choose the style and location that truly fits your family. Whether you prefer studio portraits, lifestyle images at home, or candid outdoor moments, I can create a session that feels personal and meaningful.

In addition to family portraits, I also offer newborn photography, milestone sessions, maternity portraits, and creative birthday sessions. No matter the season, there is always something worth celebrating and capturing.

If you are ready to plan a session that feels relaxed, beautiful, and perfectly timed for your family, I would love to help you create something special.
