What to Wear for Newborn Photos: A Manalapan NJ Photographer’s Complete Guide

You just booked your newborn photo session (congratulations, by the way), and now you are standing in front of your closet completely stuck. What do you wear? What should your partner wear? And if you have an older child who is going to be in the photos, how do you make everyone look coordinated without looking like you all walked out of a catalog?

Take a breath. This is one of the most common questions I get from new and expecting parents, and I promise it is simpler than it feels right now. After photographing families throughout Manalapan and Monmouth County, I have seen what works beautifully on camera and what tends to fall flat. Here is everything you need to know.

The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Do Not Match

Let me say this clearly: you do not need to wear matching outfits. In fact, I would encourage you not to. When everyone is wearing the exact same color from head to toe, the clothing becomes the focal point instead of your faces and your connection. What you want instead is a coordinated palette, a set of colors that complement each other and feel intentional without being identical.

Think of it like designing a room. You would not paint every wall, pillow, and piece of furniture the same shade of beige. You would layer tones and textures. The same principle applies to your family’s wardrobe for photos.

Colors That Photograph Beautifully

Soft, muted tones are your best friend for newborn sessions. Think dusty rose, sage green, cream, soft grey, muted blue, warm taupe, and ivory. These colors keep the focus on your baby and create a timeless quality in the images that will still look stunning on your wall ten years from now.

If you love bolder color, that is perfectly fine. Just anchor it. One person in a deeper tone like burgundy, navy, or forest green looks gorgeous when everyone else is in softer neutrals. It adds depth to the image without competing with your newborn.

What I would steer you away from: neon colors, large logos, busy patterns, and graphic tees. They pull the eye and tend to date the photos quickly. Small, subtle textures like a knit sweater or a linen button-down add visual interest without becoming a distraction.

For Mom

First and most importantly, wear something you feel good in. You just had a baby. Your body has done something extraordinary, and you deserve to feel comfortable and beautiful in these photos.

Flowy dresses and tops with some drape to them photograph wonderfully and are forgiving in all the right ways. A wrap dress, a soft maxi dress, or even a simple blouse with well-fitted jeans can look stunning. Stick with solid colors or very subtle patterns. Off-the-shoulder or V-necklines tend to be the most flattering on camera.

If you are nursing, think about accessibility. Wrap tops and button-front blouses make it easy to feed your baby during the session without any wardrobe stress.

For Dad

Keep it simple and classic. A solid button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a fitted henley, or a clean crew-neck sweater all photograph really well. Layer when you can: an open button-down over a plain tee adds dimension to the image.

Avoid shorts if possible (long pants create a more polished look in portraits), and make sure whatever you choose fits well. A shirt that is too baggy or too tight will be noticeable in the final images. Match your tones to whatever mom is wearing, but you do not need to be in the same color. If she is in dusty rose, you might be in grey or navy. If she is in cream, a soft olive or chambray blue works beautifully.

For Siblings

Little ones get a bit more flexibility. A simple dress, romper, or even a onesie in a coordinating color works perfectly. For toddlers and older kids, comfort is key. If your child is miserable in what they are wearing, it is going to show in the photos. Choose something soft, something they can move in, and something that does not have cartoon characters or large words across the front.

If you have more than one older child, you can have them complement each other. One in a solid and one in a subtle pattern, or two different shades within the same color family. It creates visual variety while still looking pulled together.

Textures and Layers Add Magic

One of the easiest ways to take your family’s wardrobe from good to gorgeous is to think about texture. Knits, linen, cotton, lace, denim: these all photograph differently and add richness to an image. A chunky knit blanket wrapped around mom and baby, dad in a soft flannel, a sibling in a little knit romper. Suddenly the image has depth and warmth that a set of plain solid t-shirts simply cannot create.

A Wardrobe Tip I Recommend to Every Client

Here is something I always suggest to my families, and it makes a world of difference: lay everything out together on your bed the night before the session. Place each person’s outfit side by side and look at the full picture. Do the colors feel cohesive? Is there one piece that sticks out? This is your chance to swap something out before the morning of the shoot when you are running on two hours of sleep and a cold cup of coffee.

If you want to take it a step further, I am happy to help. Send me a few photos of your outfit options before the session and I will give you honest feedback on what will look best. Think of it as a mini wardrobe consultation to take the guesswork out of the equation. (This is something I love doing for my clients, and I think it makes a real difference in the final gallery.)
