Let’s be honest: family photo day can sometimes feel less like a fun memory-making experience and more like a high-stakes production. Coordinating outfits, keeping little ones happy, and hoping for good weather…it’s enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed.
But it doesn’t have to be that way!
At Jules Creative Photography, my goal is to take the pressure off and help you actually enjoy the process. Here are a few simple tips to help you prepare for your family photo session, ensuring it’s smooth, relaxed, and maybe even (gasp!) enjoyable.
Kids cranky at 6 pm? Does your partner only smile after their second cup of coffee? Timing matters. If we’re shooting outdoors, the best light of the day, usually early morning or the hour before sunset, is ideal, but it’s also important to choose a time when your family feels their best. I’ll work with you to find the right balance between beautiful lighting and happy moods.
Pro tip: If we’re shooting with little ones, a well-timed snack and a quick car nap can work wonders.
Gone are the days of everyone needing to be in white shirts and jeans (although it’s totally cool if that’s the vibe you’re going for). Choose two or three main colors and build a palette from there. Soft neutrals, warm earth tones, or muted jewel tones photograph beautifully and let your family’s personality shine.
Avoid large logos, neon colors, and loud patterns. And when in doubt, lay all the outfits out on your bed to see how they look together.
Bonus tip: Dress mom first. When she feels confident and comfortable, everything else tends to fall into place.
One of the biggest sources of photo day stress is running late. Give yourself a buffer when getting dressed and getting out the door. Leave room for last-minute shoe changes, missing hair bows, and snack breaks.
And don’t stress if your child brings along a favorite stuffed animal. Those small personal details often make for the most meaningful photos.
Talk to your kids ahead of time about what to expect. Let them know the session will be fun, relaxed, and maybe even a little silly. Bribing isn’t always necessary, but having something to look forward to after the session (ice cream, anyone?) can help keep the mood light.
Remember, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s connection. Let the hugs, giggles, and real moments happen. I’ll take care of the rest.
You don’t have to know how to pose or worry about getting every smile just right. That’s my job.
I’ll guide you throughout the session, whether it’s through playful prompts, gentle direction, or simply observing you in your natural element. Some of the best photos happen when you forget the camera is there.
So take a breath, be present, and enjoy the moment.
Family photo sessions should be something you look forward to, not something that feels overwhelming. With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can walk away with images filled with real connection, personality, and joy.
