When Should I Schedule My Newborn Photos? A Timeline for New Parents

One of the questions I hear most often from expecting parents is a simple one: when should I book my newborn photos? The answer has two parts, and both of them matter. There is when to book the session, and then there is when the actual session should take place. Getting both right makes the entire experience smoother, and it gives your baby the best chance at those beautiful, peaceful newborn portraits you have been dreaming about.

When to Book: Your Second Trimester Is the Sweet Spot

I recommend booking your newborn session during your second trimester, ideally somewhere between 20 and 28 weeks. I know that might feel early. You are still months away from meeting your baby, and the nursery probably is not even painted yet. But here is why early booking matters.

Professional newborn photographers work with very limited availability. Because the ideal window for newborn portraits is so narrow (more on that in a moment), most photographers can only take a handful of newborn sessions each month. If you wait until after the baby is born to start looking for a photographer, you may find that the best ones in your area are already fully booked during your baby’s optimal window.

When you book during your second trimester, we reserve a tentative date on the calendar based on your due date. We both know babies do not always follow the plan, so once your little one arrives, you simply let me know and we confirm the exact session date. It is flexible, stress-free, and it means one less thing to worry about during those wild first days at home.

When to Photograph: The 5 to 14 Day Window

The ideal time for a newborn portrait session is between 5 and 14 days after birth. This is the window where everything comes together for those classic newborn images.

During this time, your baby is still incredibly sleepy. They spend most of the day in deep sleep cycles, which means they settle into poses naturally and peacefully. They are also still very flexible from their time in the womb, so they curl into those tucked, cozy positions that define beautiful newborn photography.

Their skin is typically at its smoothest during this window as well. Baby acne, which is completely normal and harmless, tends to appear around weeks two through four. While it is absolutely fixable in editing, starting with clear skin means less retouching and a more natural final image.

After about two weeks, babies become more alert, more reactive to their environment, and more difficult to settle into those deep sleep poses. Sessions after this window can still produce gorgeous images, but they will lean more toward awake, lifestyle-style portraits rather than those serene sleeping poses.

What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?

Babies do not check the calendar before they arrive. If your little one shows up a week early or a week late, that is completely fine. We adjust.

When you book with me, I keep your estimated due date on the calendar with flexibility built in on either side. As soon as you deliver, you reach out (a quick text is perfect, even from the hospital), and we lock in the session date. Most of the time, we are able to schedule within that ideal first two weeks. If circumstances push us outside that window, whether it is a NICU stay, a difficult recovery, or just the chaos of new parenthood, we make it work. Your family’s wellbeing always comes first.

Planning Around Siblings

If you have an older child who will be part of the session, timing gets a little more nuanced, but it is absolutely manageable.

For toddlers (ages one through three), I typically recommend scheduling their portion of the session first, while their patience and energy are at their peak. We capture the sibling photos and any family groupings early on, and then the toddler is free to go play, watch a show, or have a snack while we focus on the solo newborn portraits.

For older kids (four and up), the process is usually easier. They can sit, follow simple directions, and are often genuinely excited to hold and interact with the new baby. I find that some of the most beautiful, unscripted moments come from watching a big brother or sister meet their new sibling in front of the camera for the first time.

If your older child is in school or daycare, keep that in mind when we schedule. A morning session on a day they are home tends to work best, before anyone gets overtired or overstimulated.

The Simple Timeline

Here is a quick reference for how this all comes together. During your second trimester, between 20 and 28 weeks, book your session. Once the baby arrives, send me a quick message. Within 24 to 48 hours, we confirm the session date, typically scheduling between days 5 and 14. Before the session, I send you a prep guide covering wardrobe, feeding, and what to expect. On session day, you show up, relax, and let me do the rest.
